In 1853, the crew aboard the USS Susquehanna were some of the first Americans ever to stroll down the scenic streets of Kyoto’s Gion district. The population of Kyoto was estimated to be ~300,000 at that time. Today, nearly 2 million people reside in Kyoto and over 5 million tourists visit Kyoto every month.
